Diagnosis
PROFIBUS diagnosis is a complex matter: Depending on the
respective application, diagnosis information is required in various places, in
different systems, at varied points in time, in distinct forms and in varying
degree of detail. At the same time, PROFIBUS diagnosis is not just limited to
physical measurements during commissioning. The valuable diagnosis information
can be efficiently used in all phases of the life cycle. Diagnosis concepts
already defined in the planning stage not only speed up commissioning and

The interface specification describes the standardized data exchange
between device specific software components (DTMs) and primary control
system or engineering and asset management tools (FDT frame application).

One solution for an effective Asset Management is the Asset Management
Solutions software (AMS) of Emerson Process Management.

One solution for an effective Asset Management is the
Asset Management Solutions software (AMS) of Emerson Process Management.
By their own account, AMS makes Emerson the world-wide market leader with
regard to the number of configured field devices. AMS is a highly
sophisticated software based on the DDL concept (Device Description
Language). So far, only HART and Foundation Fieldbus have been supported.
However, integrating PROFIBUS into AMS now allows configuration of HART
devices that are connected to the PROFIBUS via Remote I/O (RIO) with HART
functionality. PROFIBUS integration has been done within the scope of a
joint development with Trebing & Himstedt. Thus, HART devices can directly
benefit from the advantages of the highly efficient Asset Management
functions for commissioning, diagnosis and maintenance through the PROFIBUS.
However, the problem remains that only a central, control-system independent
approach enables business-wide Asset Management in the long run. Trebing &
Himstedt has developed a device concept that provides an ethernet-based
interface with the respective fieldbus interfaces (such as PROFIBUS) for the
DDL concept. The AMS software is connected to the field installation and
operated from an engineering station. Device management can be done from a
local or central plant access point.
